Boston Globe Article about Condom Distribution in the Public Schools

The following article appeared in today's Boston Globe (Monday, June 28th). Although we know that condoms are made available at Revere High School, should we also worry about condoms becoming available to middle school students and elementary students, too?

  1. There is no way that these condoms can not get into the hands of students whose parents would prefer them to be more responsible about sexual activity. The school department should change their policy.

  2. I agree that the school department should change its policy.

  3. Condoms can fail, which would open the teens up to pregnancy and STD's.

  4. I hope the school committee is following the activities of the school based health center at the High School! Since it's been a few months that there has been a posting to this blog, it appears that there's no discussion. Let's change that now and moving forward into 2011. Thanks.

  5. We Can Do Better!
That was the title for a study that has been published about Western Europe's successes in curbing teen pregnancy and STD's.

  6. The study came out in 2002, and its publication was funded by Oregon Rights, Respect, Responsibility (R).

At the time this study was published, the U.S. had the highest amount of teen births, STD's, and abortions, than any other industrialized nation in the world.

The study was conducted by a team of 16 Oregonians in June 2001, that was sponsored by Advocates for Youth which is a Washington D.C. based organization. The team researched the behavior of teens in Germany, France and the Netherlands.

A more detailed account of the study tour experience and European strategies around issues related to adolescent sexuality can be obtained by looking up "Aimer Sns Puer: European Approaches to Adolescent Sexual Behavior and Responsibility" by Linda Berne and Barbara Huberman.
